Immediate: Habitat tends to get involved a little later on in the rebuilding process. Clean-up immediately after a disaster is potentially dangerous work that is best left to those who specialize in what we call “muck and gut” (cleaning out the muck, gutting out interiors). Please remember that a large-scale recovery operation takes time to organize. Be patient with these organizations if you do not hear from them immediately. They are managing a lot of moving parts right now.
Continuing: Communities are going to be feeling the effects of this storm for months and even years. Your time, money, and energy will be needed beyond the immediate moment, and organizations will continue to have work for volunteers to do.
